Reports: Russian security chief says NATO poses threat

MOSCOW - Russian news reports have quoted the nation’s security chief as saying that NATO has remained a threat.

Russia’s Security Council chief Nikolai Patrushev said that the alliance’s expansion eastward to include former Soviet allies and Soviet republics has undermined the nation’s security.

He was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying Tuesday that NATO continues to pose a "serious threat" to Russia.

Russia’s military doctrine released last week singled NATO out as a top security threat to Russia.

Patrushev bristled at NATO’s statement offering potential membeship to Russia’s ex-Soviet neighbours Georgia and Ukraine. He also criticized unidentified NATO members for supplying weapons to Georgia.

Russia fought a war with Western-leaning Georgia in August 2008.
