MELBOURNE, Australia - Ryan Cochrane of Victoria won the gold medal in the men’s 1,500-metre freestyle Sunday at the Victoria State swimming championships.

Cochrane’s victory was one of two Canadian medal performances on the day. Calgary’s Erica Morningstar was second in the women’s 200 individual medley.

Cochrane grabbed the lead for good in his race at the 150-metre mark and cruised to victory in 15 minutes 35.19 seconds. Shane Asbury of Australia was second in 15:52.29.

It was Cochrane’s second victory of the meet after winning the 400 freestyle Friday.

Morningstar earned the silver medal in her event with a time of 2:16.39. Alicia Coutts of Australia was the winner in 2:13.40.

Kevyn Peterson and Breanna Hendricks, both of Calgary, were sixth and seventh respectively in the women’s 200 freestyle while Hanna Kubas and Katie Murdoch, also both from Calgary, were seventh and eighth in the women’s 50 backstroke.

Morningstar, Murdoch, Hendriks and Peterson were fourth in the 4X100 freestyle relay.

Caitlin Nolan of Toronto was sixth in the women’s 1,500 freestyle while Stefan Hirniak of Victoria was eighth in the men’s 100 butterfly.
