MOSCOW - Brent Hayden of Vancouver swam to a second-place finish in the 200-metre freestyle Saturday to collect his second silver medal at the World Cup event.

Alexander Sokhorukov of Russia won the gold medal in one minute 42.13 seconds. Hayden followed in 1:42.25 and Darian Townsend of South Africa was third in 1:42.41.

Hayden took the silver in the 100 freestyle in Canadian short-course record time Friday.

"Ultimately I wanted to win but it was still a pretty good time for me," Hayden said. "I haven’t done a whole lot of racing since this summer so this meet was a good chance to figure out where my body is and see what I could do."

The meet was Hayden’s first competitive appearance since he helped Canada to world short-course records in the 4x200 freestyle and 4x100 medley relay at the British Grand Prix in August.

"The biggest challenge at the start of the new season is regaining your confidence," said Hayden. "My performance (Friday) in the 100 helped a lot and I really attacked my 200 today as hard as I could. I could barely get out of the pool after the race so I know I left everything in there."

Hayden was eighth in the 50 freestyle later Saturday. Roland Schoeman of South Africa won the gold in a World Cup record time of 20.88. Evgeniy Lagunov of Russia was second in 21.16 and Stefan Nystrand of Sweden finished third in 21.23.
