MONTREAL - A woman charged with attempting to murder her daughter in what police have termed an "honour crime" was denied bail Friday.
Johra Kaleki had her request rejected by Quebec court Judge Salvatore Mascia.
Kaleki’s next court appearance is Aug. 30, when a date will be set for her preliminary hearing.
A Montreal police spokesman said in June shortly after Kaleki’s arrest that investigators quickly reached the conclusion it was an ’’honour’’ crime after scanning evidence gathered from the home, from witnesses and from the victim herself.
Crown prosecutor Anne Gauvin welcomed the decision after listening to the judge read his lengthy ruling, which took almost an hour.
Gauvin said no other conditions have been applied to the mother of four daughters; the Afghan-born woman will be allowed to communicate with the girls.
That includes the 19-year-old daughter who police said suffered head, face, shoulder and arm injuries during a June 13 attack in the family’s suburban home.
Kaleki will also be able to communicate with her husband.
A publication ban has been imposed on the details of the judge’s decision Friday, including the reasons he gave for denying bail. Gauvin said the ban will apply until the 39-year-old woman goes to trial.
’’We’re satisfied with the detention because that’s what we asked for and we’ll be back in court in August," Gauvin told reporters.
Kaleki is also charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.
She sat quietly in the prisoner’s dock and listened to the judge’s explanations with the help of an interpreter.
