RIMOUSKI, Que. - About 20,000 Quebecers remain without electricity in the Gaspesie region after an accumulation of ice knocked down power lines between Rimouski and Matapedia.

Teams are in place repairing the damage.

The blackout hit the region around 5 a.m. Thursday, with 40,000 households affected.

By midday, Hydro-Quebec was able to restore electricity to half the region by re-routing power from the Eel River hydro station in New Brunswick.

Hydro-Quebec says all its customers should have power by late afternoon Thursday.
