Up to 3,000 spectators are expected for the 28th annual Mr. Muscle and Bikini Contest at the east end of Skaha Beach this Sunday.
The organizing team of Junior Chamber International, which puts on the event, said it’s their biggest fundraiser of the year.
Net proceeds go to charities and non-profit organizations around Penticton. Spokesperson Carol Sheridan said JCI raised about $10,000 last year that went to 26 local projects in the community.
Contestants also receive cash prizes, with first place receiving $500, second place $300 and third spot $200.
“It is not degrading,” said Sheridan. “The judges (who are chosen among the sponsors) are looking for confidence and how the contestants get the crowd going.”
The fenced-off event is a great way for locals and vacationers alike to enjoy a couple of drinks from the beverage garden and fresh burgers off the barbeque on the beach while watching a fun event.
The two contests run from noon to 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door, but there will be $5 discount cards around the community at sponsor locations such as Salty‘s, Earl’s and Sun FM.
The beach party will include performances by rock bands, Careful with that Axe and Malibu Knights, where there will also be radio personality of 97.1 Sun-FM, Randy Farmer and a DJ playing upbeat music all day.
