The creative works of a group of arts club students from KVR Middle School commemorating International Women‘s Day is currently on display at the Penticton Public Library.
Teacher Lindsey Mennell, who came up with the idea, said she collaborated with Chandra Wong of the Penticton and Area Women‘s Centre on the project.
“We had a bunch of different names of Canadian women that they could do some research on,” said Mennell. “They used some of those ideas, but then they wanted to come up with some of their own women that they felt were inspirational.”
Students selected women such as Mary Parlby, the first female cabinet minister in Alberta, Lights, a Juno Award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter and Canadian Olympian Becky Scott.
“They did some research and then we wanted them to put their work into a comic-book style with different frames,” she said. “Then, from the frames, they put them onto little canvasses … so those are kind of like each frame of the comic to show the women‘s lives and what they achieved in images.”
Mennell said using a comic book-oriented design would be more appealing and interesting to the students and would encourage more to participate.
Male and female students worked on the project, which began early February. During the development, Mennell had discussions with the students to signify the importance of the women‘s place in history.
The works are on display at the Penticton Public Library.
