The Okanagan Skaha school board is taking a consultative approach to its forthcoming budget decisions: it‘s asking the public for input.
Trustees believe they‘re making it as convenient as possible for people to offer suggestions for how and where cuts should be made.
Secretary-treasurer Ron Shongrunden told trustees at Monday‘s meeting there could be a shortfall of up to $1 million.
The board recently posted an online survey for parents and members of the public to complete. Shongrunden said blank spaces allow for
additional comments to be offered.
“We‘re reaching people who ordinarily don‘t feel that they have had a voice,” said trustee Linda Van Alphen.
She added that parents often don‘t have time to attend meetings, while others feel uncomfortable with that style of forum.
Trustee Tom Siddon asked what can be done to promote the fact the survey is available, making note of the Herald, which was the only
media with a reporter present at Monday‘s meeting.
Superintendent Wendy Hyer said results of the survey could lead to a followup survey.
A public meeting will also be held at 7 p.m. March 31 at Penticton Secondary School.
