Summerland council unanimously agreed Monday that the community will participate in National Health and Fitness Day on the first Saturday of June.
In 2014, National Health and Fitness Day was formalized into law by the federal government to establish a day to promote health and wellness in all communities, recreation manager Lori Mullin told council.
Sen. Nancy Greene Raine wrote a letter dated April 30, 2018, encouraging communities to offer health and fitness programming with the goal of making Canada the fittest nation on earth.
Action Festival, a long-established tradition in Summerland held on the first weekend in June, coincides with National Health and Fitness Day.
Festival activities such as the Giants Head Run, Man-of-Steel and slo-pitch ball tournament along with a community dance and children’s activities promote the importance and use of local health, recreational and fitness facilities.
