I've Got You Covered by Kyle Anderson
Local musician Kyle Anderson recently completed a CD featuring 11 remakes appropriately titled "I've Got you Covered."
Anderson, best known as the front-man of The Amazing Rubber Band, has previously released three CDs with his Rubber Bandmates, guested on several others and did a duets album with Gail Riddall of Penticton. However this is truly his first solo project.
Solo is a perfect word as he provided all vocals and played every instrument which includes piano, several guitars, bass and programmed drums.
"These were some of my favourite songs from years ago and there's nothing newer than about 1972," said Anderson. "I chose them because they are fun songs. I still have 30 songs sitting on my computer and I deliberately did not do originals because at my concerts, people don't want to hear originals. They want to dance and have a good time."
Anderson, a hard-core Beatles fan, admitted he restrained himself and only included on song by the Fab Four Ñ John Lennon's "You've To to Hide Your Love Away".
"I learned there's a lot more to making an album than walking into a studio with a guitar and singing a song. I've studied engineering, mixing, mastering and developed techniques that offer what I consider to be a very professional sound. For some of the songs I stay true to the originals while others I put my own personal take on."
"The Midnight Special", which was popularized by Clearance Clearwater Revival, includes honkeytonk piano which Anderson said came to him in a dream.
Of the 11 tracks he found the most challenging to be "Father and Son" by the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens.
"I changed the key to suit my baritone voice and I based the song around a piano instead of acoustic guitar. I tried to capture the essence of the song but with my own particular feel and I'm pleased how it turned out."
He dedicated the album to his three children Ñ Erin, Darcy and Cole.
Other tracks on "I've Got You Covered" include "Draggin the Line", "Blues Stay Away from Me", "Bring It On Home To Me", "It's All Right", "Feel a Whole Lot Better", "Rainshowers", "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town" and "Singing the Blues".
This year was a busy one for Anderson. The Rubber Band celebrated its 15th anniversary and he also joined The Trio featuring Ken Mehrer of Flashback fame and virtuoso guitarist Craig Brown.
"The Rubber Band's role is to make people dance but The Trio is a little more self-indulgent. It's very challenging because we're tackling more intricate arrangements. I get a chance to play standup bass and enjoy playing with Kenny and Craig who are incredibly skilled guitar players."
"I've Got You Covered" by Kyle Anderson sells for $20 (tax included) and can be purchased at his live shows, online at www.dkyleanderson.com or by phone at 250-492-5670.
