City looking at SOEC contracts

With Global Spectrum's first five-year term of a 20-year contract set to expire at the end of 2013 the City of Penticton has begun the process of accepting request for proposals for another term. City Manager Annette Antoniak said the Request for Proposal process began on March 1 and will run until April 30. Some proponents that were unfamiliar with the facility were given the chance to go on a tour last week. No proposals have been submitted to date which Antoniak said isn't uncommon based on her previous experience. Global Spectrum, a US-based company, manages the South Okanagan Events Centre, Okanagan Hockey School Training Centre, the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre and Memorial Arena.

Calling kids of the arts

Students are reminded that the bursary deadline from the Community Foundation of the South Okanagan has been extended to April 15. Each year the foundation grants bursaries each year from the Sharon Amos Legacy Fund for the Arts and the Dr. John & Kathy Scarfo bursary to deserving students living within the boundaries of the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen. Amos, who made an undeniable mark in the community through her passion for art and music, tragically passed away in January of 2010. In her memory, a bursary fund was set up to support students pursuing a career in music and art. Scarfo learned the value of "paying-it-forward" after he was given financial support from one of his professors at the University of British Columbia, which allowed him to continue his education and complete a degree in medicine. Scarfo never forgot this act of generosity and established a bursary fund with the foundation to provide financial support to individuals who are working hard to better their lives. "The bursaries provided by the community foundation are all about giving back to our community," said Aaron McRann, executive director of the foundation. "We are working closely with our donors to help deserving students achieve their educational goals and improve their lives." Bursaries are open to students who are enrolled in or planning to attend college or university and who live within the specified boundaries.
