Dead Rising is back and on the latest Microsoft Xbox One with a bang. The game elevates the series above the past games, creating a masterpiece for zombie fans to experience. The games in the past had good visuals, but this latest game takes the visuals to the next level. The game's camera zooms in more making the zombie models look remarkably detailed. The number of zombies that were impressive before have taken a leap in the number on screen at one time. The character models of the survivors and the main character look detailed and show blood splatter from decimated enemies. The voice acting is solid as is the audio soundtrack. The game follows a survivor and mechanic called Nick Ramos. You quickly find yourself in a heap of trouble and dropped in a city that is overwhelmed with a massive zombie infestation. For anyone that missed the last few Dead Rising titles, the game is an open world zombie slaughter-fest. You can find different weaponry and items littered around the game's different shops and streets. The games were very popular for the crafting system that let you combine different items together and create some truly fantastical weaponry. This game increases the number of items you can create, and even lets you create combinations you never would have thought of. The game has taken filling the screen with zombies to an entirely new level. It has you using everything from a street light to a crowbar to fight your way through the endless undead to get to your quest. The game is open world, so you can run around saving survivors, finding weapon blueprints, crime scenes and many other activities. You will have a clock that ticks by before a bomb gets dropped to manage the spread of the outbreak. The games controls are spot on. No matter the type of weapon you're using, the controls are tight and responsive. The last thing you need is delayed controls when being surrounded by hungry undead. You use the X button for light attacks and the Y button for strong attacks. The strong attacks are slower, so you trade speed for power. The game also has a kill meter that has a running tally of the enemies you killed in quick succession. After the first 10 or so are killed quickly, you can perform a special attack by pressing the Y and B buttons when near a zombie. This attack zooms the camera in and lets you finish off a zombie in a brutal and permanent way. The special attacks vary depending on the weapon you're using. All the kills you do give you experience points that will level up your character. Regular kills are worth the least amount of points. If you use combo or super combo weapons, you will get higher and higher points. The special attacks will give you even more points. All the experience will let you upgrade your characters with new attacks, new combo weaponry and many other traits. You can spend many days just leveling up your character. Another cool addition is the fact that the player can combine two or more vehicles together to create the ultimate zombie killer. In previous games, the player could only create these combo weapons at work benches littered around the game's map. The developers dropped this and a player can create weapons on the fly anytime, anywhere. This gives the player a newfound freedom, and lets them enjoy the splatter-fest more than other installments. The save feature has also seen improvement. A player can now save the game at anytime by pausing the game and selecting save. You can still save at portable toilets and other bathrooms like in previous games if you like. In the past, gamers had issues with the constant time restraint that would limit the exploration you could do. Dead Rising has given players more freedom and added more time for you to explore at your leisure. There is still a clock that counts down the hours until a bomb gets dropped, but the time flows slower letting you enjoy the experience more. If you're up for a challenge, you can play the game through nightmare mode, which makes zombies more aggressive and limits the time and places you can save. As always, a friend can join in the fun with local cooperative play or through Xbox Live. Psychos make a comeback. These are humans that have cracked with the zombie Apocalypse and have now taken to killing humans. It's now up to you to take out these Psychos and make the world safer. Dead Rising is a perfect game to showcase the power of Microsoft's new system, and is great game for zombie fans. 9/10.
